A portrait bust sculpted from earthenware clay and fired with a Bronze glaze. Done in a mannered style, with a dramatic, expressively turned head and tender expression.

This exquisite and mysterious portrait bust came into our possession a few years ago. We've been trying to identify it ever since but have not succeeded in finding the artist or the sitter.

This dramatic style was popular in photography in the 1940s, particularly Hollywood portrait photography, and follows the conventions of 20th century theatrical portrait sculpture, with its hauteur and drama.

Mathilda arrived wearing a chain mesh necklace of indeterminate age - possibly 1970s. It is part of this sale. Please see images.

The base is signed, indistinctly. We have included an image of a lead pencil rubbing of the signature because the glossy surface of the glaze makes photography difficult.

It's a quite remarkable sculpture. It's life sized and one strongly feels her presence in the room. She has an aura of strength and reserve mixed with expressive emotion. She’s youthful, resolute and tender. Though somewhat exaggerated in its modelling, this portrait represents a woman of character and integrity.

The signature is difficult to photograph so a graphite tracing of it is provided.

The bust has had a small repair made in the past, to the chip in the base. See images. The necklace is in tarnished and worn condition.
