1980s John Irving Handspun Wool Abstract Brutalist Textile Wall Hanging

1980s John Irving Handspun Wool Abstract Brutalist Textile Wall Hanging
This deliciously tactile and textural work by Australian artist John Irving is made of pure handspun Australian wool, naturally dyed and woven, by hand, into a wild profusion of textures.
It features long plaid ropes, chunky hand weaving, long fringes and bunched wool pile in gorgeously soft, earthy tones, reminiscent of the Australian landscape.
This piece carries a tag titled 'Landscape Insight', signed and dated 13 September 1988. Irving's textile works often include fired clay pieces woven into the arrangement, however this one does not, making it easier to keep clean and to transport.
We've meticulously hand washed and dried it in ideal, breezy, warm, shady conditions. This has revived the tension and lively texture of the wool, and imparted a delicate eucalyptus scent. We love to put our fingers into the pile and feel the rich natural quality of the wool. It's a sculpture made for living with - not just looking at.
Particularly suited to Brutalist interiors in need of a softening textural contrast, or Organic Modern interiors in which the earthy tones of the piece can play with other textiles, rugs and timber.
These works rarely come up for public sale as they're prized by their owners who love living with the relaxed character and tonal warmth they provide. This one was kept in an interior hallway, away from natural light, so is in fine, undamaged condition.
There are top and bottom stretcher bars. At the top there are a set of four eye-hooks and sturdy wire. Ready for installation.
John Irving is a printer and sculptor born Melbourne, Australia 1959. His print and textile works are held in regional galleries and private collections across Australia.
