Large Signed Studio Pottery Vase w Planetary Banded Glaze, 1970s

Large Signed Studio Pottery Vase w Planetary Banded Glaze, 1970s

A$320.00

A fine, large, 1970s studio pottery bottle vase or vessel. Remarkable banded salt glaze in earthy tones of pink, brown, cream, rust, charcoal and mauve. Impressed mark to the base, see images. Identification ongoing.

Surely the potter was thinking of Saturn, Jupiter or Neptune, with their variegated bands of planetary atmosphere? It’s virtuoso example of glazing in any case - spontaneous, restrained, subtle and very beautiful.

The neck of the vase was scored and ridged as it was turned - a motif seen in Danish studio ceramics of the 1970s. It rises to a stout rim, reminiscent of the work of eminent Danish potter, Tue Poulsen.

There’s some big 1970s energy going on here - heavy, large, bold, beautifully shaped and assertive. The glaze colour is glorious.

This sale is for the vase only. The dish pictured beside it was long since sold. They were not by the same artist, nor made as a pair.

MEASURES:

37.5cm H x 24.5cm Diameter

Final image for scale, with a generous sized brown pear

CONDITION:

The neck of the vase bends slightly due to the weight of the clay during firing. No matter. Turn it one way or another to get the bent view or the vertical view. It’s a bit of extra character.
