'Parsifal' 1978 Huge Oil on Canvas by Beverley Downie in Original Box Frame

'Parsifal' 1978 Huge Oil on Canvas by Beverley Downie in Original Box Frame

A$3,200.00

A very large framed oil on canvas by extensively exhibited Australian artist, Beverley Downie.

Downie's keen interest in opera has always influenced her work. She was an action painter in the tradition of Willem de Kooning, in a more gentle and lyrical style.

Downie is now in retirement. In the late part of the 1970s she painted a brilliant series of abstract expressionist works based on her experiences of classical opera, both listening and performing.

These works are evocative of music: they are vibrating, lilting, shimmering works, which change with the light over the course of the day.

Her abstract works are lovely meditations to live with. As visual evocations of sound, they can be light and soothing or darkly stirring depending on the time of day. They’re very large in size, but they envelope the viewer rather than overwhelming.

Wonderful work by a wonderful artist, this particular painting is sold in its original frame of gilt and stained timber. The 1970s box style frame creates a fine shadow-line of space around the canvas.
