Very Large Saggar Fired Burnished Clay Vessel signed Jill Symes 1980s
Very Large Saggar Fired Burnished Clay Vessel signed Jill Symes 1980s
A very large and appealing Saggar fired vessel, made by Australian potter, Jill Symes. Signed, with original stickers and leaflet. This beautiful pot has a warm, rich, organic presence. Variegated colours range through charcoal, rust, honey, terracotta, pinks, greys, even a touch of blue. A masterful work of pottery and firing.
It's made of fine clay, shaped and then allowed to dry to a leathery consistency, then burnished with a polished stone. Once dry the pot is fired using the Saggar method of applied natural colourants, such as ferric oxide, sugar, seaweed, and other natural substances that contribute to the marking of the pot, similar to the Raku firing technique.
Note: this pot will not hold water. It is purely a decorative piece, or may be used to hold a dry arrangement.

CONDITION
This pot is now over 35 years old and there are tiny scuffs and nicks, as can be seen in the images. There is a very fine hairline crack in the shoulder of the pot, indicated and exaggerated by reflective lighting in the final listing image. It is in fact very unobtrusive. None of this minor wear can spoil the outstanding beauty of this piece.
