Mid Century Lava Glaze and Cobalt Charger in the style of Hans Coper, 1970s

Mid Century Lava Glaze and Cobalt Charger in the style of Hans Coper, 1970s
A grand scale. This broad vessel in volcanic glazes reminds us of the early work of Hans Coper. Listed as unsigned (possible indistinct underglaze signature obscured by volcanic glaze to base, see images). Likely of Japanese origin. The dark cobalt glaze to the interior, combined with volcanic glaze to the exterior, is particularly appealing.
This is one of many exceptional vessels acquired for the practice of ikebana, from the Roseby collection.
The Roseby collection includes ceramics, glass, drawings and paintings, dating from the core of the late mid century, from the 1960s through to the 1980s. It was acquired over several decades of travel and collecting by a discerning Melbourne art collector, with a particular interest in the study, practice and teaching of Ikebana. The collection represents an important array of vases and vessels, many on a grand scale.
You can find more from the collection here by searching for ‘Roseby’ in the search bar at the top of any page. Listings from this collection will continue for the month of December.
