Brutalist Wood Fired Terracotta Pottery Lamp 1970s

Brutalist Wood Fired Terracotta Pottery Lamp 1970s

A$750.00

Organic Brutalist lamp base made in the 1970s and fitted recently with a brass stem and switch. Made from a slab of terracotta formed into rock-like shapes and piercings, patterns and sgraffito marks, impressions and stamps, then Raku or Sagar fired (with wood shavings).

This piece closely follows the work of Paul Voulkos, the great expressionist and brutalist potter of the 1960s and 1970s (USA).

It makes a unique lamp of the 1970s period, with wonderful texture and highly varied appearance. A runic and megalithic presence.

Sold without shade.

Standard Australian lamp fitting with switch under shade.

MEASURES:

35cm high to top of clay, 45cm high to top of lamp fixture

25 × 20 wide at base, 15cm diameter at top of clay.

CONDITION:

Excellent rugged condition, it’s not been made with perfection in mind, so expect rough edges. The surface is matt glazed with what appears to be a sealing lacquer rather than a fired glaze. The electrical fittings are recent, tagged and tested for use to Australian Standard. We’ve added padded felt dots to the base to prevent scratching of polished surfaces.
